HISTORY

I was brought up in a musical family in Alva, Clackmannanshire. My father  was a full time luthier (instrument maker) for 25 years .  He taught all his children to play stringed instruments and I learned the cello. My mother is an accomplished pianist and accompanist and taught piano from our home. As a boy I was always fascinated when the piano tuner came to our house and I would stay in the room while he tuned.

TRAINING

In 1987 I went to Stevenson’s college in Edinburgh to study piano tuning and repair. On the course we studied piano tuning and we learned how to do all sorts of repairs from fixing hammers to major repairs such as soundboard crack repairs and piano restrings.

After I finished the course I worked in a piano workshop in South Queensferry for 5 years restoring old pianos to their former glory.

PIANO DOCTOR

Since setting up in buisiness as the Piano Doctor in 1993 I have moved to Dewar Farm outside the village of Heriot between Midlothian and the Scottish borders. I am able to work in Edinburgh, Midlothian and the central Scottish borders and can reach most of East Lothian. I am freindly, professional and really care about my work. It makes me feel very satisfied to arrive at a house with a neglected piano and leave knowing that the same piano is transformed into a functioning musical instrument ready to bring joy to whoever plays it.
